It’s interesting to consider when a person or group of people change their minds. The most common perception is that when the person is presented with some rational arguments, they might change their opinion. For light or dry decisions, this might very well be true for most people. But for issues that are fraught and tied to belief systems, minds are often made up when having a discussion. No matter how many or how strong the argument, positions don’t change.

So when do they change? Rarely in the middle of the argument, and rarely because one side ran out of counterpoints. The shift tends to happen later and quietly, once there’s no audience and no position left to defend. It also tends to come from people rather than points — a friend, a colleague, someone inside the group whose belonging isn’t in question. Direct experience does more work than logic, because a fact can be dismissed but a thing you lived through is harder to argue with. And it helps when changing is cheap: when someone can update without it looking like a defeat or a betrayal of their side. Which suggests the more useful question isn’t how to make the argument stronger, but how to lower the cost of being wrong.

For decades now, we’ve seen organizations and countries be valued for the knowledge they hold. Knowledge could be mined through research, or it could be acquired through acquiring talented people or developing individuals. We are entering a new age now. One where human agency is what will be valued. Knowledge will be boundless, always available for those who seek. But to seek knowledge, requires agency. And to apply knowledge, requires agency. In that sense, AI is the greatest leveler of our times. The role of education changes from providing knowledge to teach how to develop and exercise our agency.

This shift is harder than it sounds, because agency is not taught the way facts are taught. It is built through friction — through the struggle of forming a thought before it is fully formed, of choosing a direction without knowing where it leads, of being wrong and working out why. These are precisely the moments that a capable machine will happily remove for us, and every removal feels like progress. What we measure will have to change accordingly. If the finished work is all we grade, we will optimize for output and quietly hollow out the process that produced the thinker. The task ahead is to make the process visible again — to value how a person arrived somewhere, not just that they arrived.

So much can be communicated through a picture. A meaningfully chosen or created picture, diagram, illustration immediately captures a lot of attention of the reader. It can help assimilate the content much better. Such a picture usually takes effort to put together or identify. On the flip side, modern readers know to skim over pictures that are simply visual candy. They know to not spend time on it. ​
