So much can be communicated through a picture. A meaningfully chosen or created picture, diagram, illustration immediately captures a lot of attention of the reader. It can help assimilate the content much better. Such a picture usually takes effort to put together or identify. On the flip side, modern readers know to skim over pictures that are simply visual candy. They know to not spend time on it.
